Abstract
Saccharin is a sweet-tasting substance that was discovered in the late nineteenth century. Its use as a food additive has been associated with some controversy for various reasons. It caused bladder cancer in male rats that were exposed to it over two generations, but not in other animal models. It is not metabolized and almost completely excreted, unchanged, in urine. It is approved for use as a food additive in more than 100 nations and is considered a nonnutritive sweetener for its ability to add sweetening without calories or carbohydrates.
